Lions' WR Tom Kennedy Out for Season After Knee Injury

Detroit Lions wide receiver and return specialist Tom Kennedy has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a significant knee sprain that will require surgery. Coach Dan Campbell confirmed the news on Monday, October 14, 2026, expressing disappointment. Kennedy suffered the injury during a punt return in the second quarter of the Lions' recent victory over Arizona.

With Kennedy sidelined, Amon-Ra St. Brown has taken over as the primary punt returner, though coach Campbell indicated a desire to limit his responsibilities in that role. The team is evaluating both internal practice squad options, such as Dominic Lovett, and external free agents to address the return specialist need. The Lions will use their upcoming bye week to finalize these decisions.

In other injury news, linebacker Devin White is expected to return this season after undergoing surgery for a broken forearm sustained during the same game. However, his return will not be immediate. The team also remains uncertain about the plan for offensive lineman Cade Mays, a key offseason acquisition, who is still on injured reserve after a training camp wrist injury. Mays' 21-day practice window opened on October 7, 2026, but the team is carefully considering his return to ensure he can handle the center position effectively.

Cade Mays' unique situation at center requires careful consideration before his potential return to the field, especially with Juice Scruggs performing well in that role. The Lions have time to make this decision due to their bye week, with their next game scheduled for October 25, 2026, against Green Bay.
