Speed Skating Champ Abney Blazes Trail for Lions

Detroit Lions rookie cornerback Keith Abney is turning heads with his athletic prowess and unique background. Abney, a fifth-round selection (157th overall) in the 2026 NFL Draft, is drawing attention for his speed skating achievements.

Before focusing on football, Abney was a four-time national champion in inline speed skating. This accomplishment highlights his exceptional athleticism, balance, and competitive spirit, qualities that have translated effectively to the football field.

Abney joins the Lions' cornerback group, which saw a need after a free-agency departure. He brings a strong collegiate record, including first-team All-Big 12 honors and leading his team with three interceptions in 2025. His statistics also show strong tackling ability with a low missed tackle rate and effective coverage, allowing a low completion percentage when targeted.

Despite not possessing elite size, Abney compensates with instinct, technique, and physicality. His college performance earned him high Pro Football Focus grades, ranking among the top Power Four cornerbacks in overall defense, tackling, and coverage. He recorded six interceptions and 21 passes defended over his final two seasons.

While Abney sometimes faces penalties for grabby play and lacks elite size, many scouts believed he was a draft-day value. His potential is significant, offering the Lions valuable depth with the possibility of developing into a starting player.
