Lions DB Izien May Miss Opener Amid Injury Concerns

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced on Wednesday that defensive back Christian Izien's availability for the Sept. 13 season opener is in doubt due to an undisclosed injury. Izien, a key player in the competition for the starting nickel cornerback position and a contributor at safety, was absent from practice Tuesday.

Campbell expressed optimism that Izien would return either for the opener or early in the season, stating, "we're going to get him here." The potential absence of Izien further strains a secondary already facing uncertainty with safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the physically unable to perform list as they recover from major injuries.

Branch is rehabilitating a torn Achilles, while Joseph is managing a degenerative knee condition. Izien, who joined the Lions this offseason after three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has accumulated 165 tackles, five passes defended, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles in his career.

In other injury news, reserve linebacker Trevor Nowaske is considered to have a minor ankle strain or sprain, with Campbell expressing less concern about his recovery timeline.
