Injured Lindsey Vonn Misses Shot at Ninth Downhill Title
7 Mar
Summary
- Lindsey Vonn suffered severe injuries in a recent Olympic crash.
- She was in contention for her ninth downhill title before injury.
- Doctors saved Vonn's leg from amputation due to compartment syndrome.

Lindsey Vonn's remarkable season, aiming for a ninth downhill title, has been cut short by severe injuries sustained during the Olympic downhill event last month. Vonn suffered a complex tibial fracture, a tibial plateau fracture, and a fractured fibular head in her left leg, along with a fractured right ankle. Her condition was exacerbated by compartment syndrome, a serious complication where trapped blood flow can cause tissue death. Vonn credits her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Tom Hackett, with saving her leg from potential amputation.
Prior to her injury, Vonn had dominated the downhill season, securing the No. 1 bib after winning the first race in December and consistently appearing on the podium. Her strong performance had given her a significant lead heading into the Milano Cortina Olympics. This season's title would have tied Mikaela Shiffrin's record for most titles in a single discipline. Notably, Vonn achieved this success at 41, after being retired for nearly six years, and while skiing with a partial knee replacement, a first for an elite skier.
With Vonn sidelined, other athletes have vied for the top position. Italy's Laura Pirovano has taken the lead in the season standings with 436 points after winning two consecutive downhills. Germany's Emma Aicher follows with 408 points, and other competitors like Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, Cornelia Huetter, and Breezy Johnson remain within striking distance. The World Cup finals later this month will determine the final standings.
