Legendary Coach Belichick Linked to Giants Amid Dismal UNC Start

As of November 12th, 2025, legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, who is currently in his first year as the head coach of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels, has been linked to a potential return to the professional ranks. The New York Giants fired their head coach, Brian Daboll, on Monday after a dismal start to the 2025 season.

While several names have been floated as potential replacements for the Giants' coaching vacancy, NFL insider Gary Myers has suggested that Belichick could be the man to fill the role. Myers believes that Belichick "would walk from Chapel Hill to East Rutherford for this job" and that he "desperately wants the 15 victories to pass (Don) Shula and he desperately wants to win a Super Bowl without Brady."

Belichick has a long history with the Giants, having served as a special teams coach and defensive assistant from 1979 to 1991, before becoming the team's defensive coordinator and helping them win two Super Bowls. He later went on to become the head coach of the New England Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls over a 24-year tenure before being fired in January 2024 after two straight losing seasons.

Despite the rumors, Belichick has dismissed the speculation, stating that he is "Getting ready for Wake Forest" and that's all he has to focus on this week. The Tar Heels are currently 13th in the ACC with a 4-5 (2-3) record, and they will need to win two more games to become eligible for a bowl game.
