- Mateiko, a 20-year-old Capitals draft pick, was injured by a skate blade.

Latvia is the first nation to announce an injury replacement for the men's ice hockey tournament at the Milan Cortina Olympics. Forward Eriks Mateiko has been ruled out long-term after surgery to repair a severe Achilles tendon injury. He sustained the damage from an opponent's skate blade during a recent American Hockey League game.
The severity of the procedure means Mateiko will miss the remainder of his current season. At just 20 years old, he was anticipated to be one of the youngest players featured in the Olympic competition. Mateiko had recorded six points in 27 games for the Hershey Bears prior to his injury.
Latvia is scheduled to begin its preliminary round play on February 12th against the United States. The team will also face Germany and Denmark in group stage matches. This roster change marks a significant setback for the Latvian team as they prepare for the international competition.
