On September 5, 2025, the Lakeland High School football team pulled off an upset victory over visiting Clarkstown South, winning 21-17 in a close and emotional game. Lakeland quarterback Joe LaPeruta had a standout performance, throwing touchdown passes of 73 and 77 yards. LaPeruta then sealed the win with a 14-yard run on third down in the final minute of the game.
The pregame was particularly poignant, as Clarkstown South's starting quarterback, Tommy Ryan, participated in the coin toss via smartphone. Ryan is currently out for the season as he undergoes treatment for leukemia at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Last season, Ryan had thrown for 81 yards and a touchdown in Clarkstown South's 35-10 win over Lakeland.
