La Liga's New Rules: Time-Wasting Penalties Ahead!
19 Aug
Summary
- La Liga has adopted new rules from the World Cup to prevent time-wasting.
- VAR reviews will now require referees to explain decisions publicly.
- A rule against players covering their mouths during confrontations is enforced.

The La Liga season has commenced, introducing several rule changes influenced by the recent World Cup, aimed at ensuring faster play and greater transparency. Key among these are measures against time-wasting: players requiring on-field medical attention must now spend one minute off the pitch, and substitutes have a strict ten-second window to leave the field.
Further enhancing clarity, referees will publicly explain VAR decisions by taking to the field with a microphone. Controversial incidents have also led to new regulations, such as the 'Vinicius Jr. rule,' which penalizes players for covering their mouths during confrontations, though La Liga will issue yellow cards for this infraction instead of red.
New protocols for goal kicks and penalties are also in effect. Handling the ball by an outfield player within the six-yard box after a goal kick will result in a penalty. Additionally, 'double kicks' during penalty shots will be retaken only if scored, not if missed or saved.
