6 Jul
Summary
- Defending champion Kyle Larson became stuck in mud and grass.
- Larson's spin left him two laps down in the Chicagoland race.
- Rain impacted the NASCAR Chicagoland race significantly.
Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson faced an unfortunate incident during the eero 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on July 5. Coming out of turn 4 on Lap 94, Larson spun his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and became stuck in the grass and mud on the frontstretch. The heavy rains that plagued the Chicago area over the weekend contributed to the difficult track conditions, leaving Larson with flat tires and immobilized.
After requiring assistance to be pulled from the grass and then pushed to his pit stall, Larson found himself two laps down. This derailed his chances in a race where he was expected to contend for the win, especially given his strong starting position on the front row next to pole-sitter Denny Hamlin. Larson entered the event fifth in points, facing a 42-race winless streak prior to this race.
