Kusal Mendis achieved a significant milestone during the second ODI against England, scoring 121 runs off 100 balls. This century places him in an elite group as only the second wicketkeeper-batter for Sri Lanka, following Kumar Sangakkara, to score an ODI century while captaining the side. Sangakkara's similar feat occurred in 2011 against New Zealand.
Mendis' impressive knock also made him the third Sri Lankan captain, after Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene, to record an ODI century against England. Globally, he is the third wicketkeeper-batter to achieve this distinction against England as captain, with Quinton de Kock and Shai Hope also holding similar records. Babar Azam holds the highest individual score as captain against England.
During his innings, Mendis formed a 137-run partnership for the second wicket with Kamindu Mendis, who contributed 54 runs. He later added 40 runs for the third wicket with Pavan Rathnayake. Mendis was eventually dismissed in the 36th over of Sri Lanka's innings.
