An extraordinary 1,500 km cycling expedition across Egypt's Sahara Desert is set to begin on Monday, undertaken by three determined adventurers from Kolkata. The team, led by renowned Mount Everest summiteer Malay Mukherjee, includes fellow cyclists Debashis Chakraborty and Partha Pratim Hazra.
The arduous journey will commence in Alexandria, proceeding west of the Nile delta towards Cairo. From there, the cyclists will venture into the surreal chalk formations of the Bahariya White Desert, a region known for its challenging winds and scarce resupply points. Their route then continues towards Lake Nasser, traversing the volcanic Black Desert and the unique Crystal Mountain.
Facing potential headwinds of 30 km per hour, extreme heat, and long stretches of isolation, the team has set an ambitious target to complete the 1,500 km journey in just 11 days. Carrying a message to promote environmental conservation and the use of bicycles, this expedition highlights the thrill and challenges of adventure travel.
