25 Aug
Summary
- Ketel Marte expected back next week after two weeks away.
- Marte's absence was unexplained, raising concerns for the team.
- Manager respects Marte's privacy while team navigates return.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are preparing for the potential return of All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte next week. Manager Torey Lovullo indicated the team's strategy is for Marte to rejoin the lineup for the home series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which begins on August 31. This return would mark roughly two weeks since Marte's unexpected disappearance before a game in Boston.
Marte was initially placed on the restricted list, then moved to the 10-day injured list with mild knee inflammation. He has yet to address his teammates regarding the circumstances of his departure during the team's playoff push. Lovullo acknowledged Marte's private nature and stated the team is creating a supportive environment for his re-emergence.
The manager also touched upon the possibility of a negative fan reaction, expressing hope that fans will rally around the player. He noted that Marte's tendency to 'go to the beat of his own drum' is part of what makes him an extraordinary player, and he respects that approach.
