Ex-LSU recruit Darby shines vs. Tigers, proving Kiffin wrong

Kentucky freshman receiver Kenny Darby is exceeding expectations, emerging as a key offensive weapon for the Wildcats. Through five games in the current season, Darby leads the team with 25 receptions for 322 yards and has tied for the team lead with three touchdown catches. His recent performance includes a career-high 12 receptions for 96 yards and a score.

Darby's journey to Kentucky is marked by a significant recruiting twist. He initially committed to LSU in November 2024, with offensive coordinator Joe Sloan as his primary recruiter. However, following the dismissal of the previous coaching staff and the arrival of Lane Kiffin in November 2025, Kiffin's staff evaluated commits. Ultimately, Kiffin's team decided not to retain Darby.

Shortly after being released from his LSU commitment, Darby found a strong advocate in Joe Sloan, who joined Kentucky as offensive coordinator. Sloan quickly recruited Darby to the Wildcats, securing his commitment on December 5, 2025, just one day after Sloan was hired. This partnership has contributed to Kentucky's strong 4-1 start to the season.

Darby is currently on pace to set new freshman records at Kentucky, potentially surpassing Dane Key's record of six receiving touchdowns and Barion Brown's freshman records for receptions (59) and receiving yards (628). His former coach, Justin Scogin, noted Darby's mature handling of his decommitment from LSU, expressing more frustration himself over the situation.
