Magwood's NIT Surge: Auburn's Mystery Solved?
21 Mar
Summary
- Freshman Kaden Magwood scored a season-high 14 points in the NIT.
- Coach Steven Pearl cited defensive efficiency as reason for limited play.
- Magwood's minutes increased following KeShawn Murphy's departure.

Auburn Tigers freshman guard Kaden Magwood, a former four-star recruit, has seen limited action during his debut season. However, Magwood exploded in the NIT opener against South Alabama, scoring a season-high 14 points on efficient shooting, including three successful three-pointers. This performance raised questions about his previous lack of playing time.
Head coach Steven Pearl explained earlier in the season that junior guard Blake Muschalek was often chosen over Magwood due to Muschalek's superior defensive capabilities. Pearl stated that Magwood's defense needed refinement for consistent production, highlighting Muschalek's ability to contribute defensively and manage the offense.
Magwood's playing time saw a significant increase in the NIT, nearing a season-high 17 minutes. This surge in minutes was partly influenced by an adjusted rotation following KeShawn Murphy's unexpected departure from the program before a recent game. Murphy is not expected to return.
Despite a season that fell short of expectations, Magwood's emergence in the NIT offers a positive outlook for the Auburn Tigers as they conclude their 2026 campaign. The team is scheduled to play Seattle U on Sunday in the Second Round of the NIT, with coverage on ESPN 2.
