Canadian Striker Lands at Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid finalized a season-long loan deal for Canadian international Jonathan David from Juventus on September 1, 2026. The agreement features a non-obligatory purchase option set at €25 million, marking David as the first Canadian player to join the Spanish club. David has already completed his medical and received the number 15 jersey.

The acquisition addresses a critical gap in Atletico's forward line, exacerbated by Alexander Sorloth's injury and uncertainty surrounding Julián Álvarez. Juventus is reportedly covering a substantial portion of David's €11 million gross annual salary, making the loan financially advantageous for Atletico.

David brings a prolific scoring record from his time at Lille, where he amassed 109 goals and 31 assists between 2020 and 2025. Despite a less prolific spell at Juventus during the 2025-26 season, where he scored between 6 and 8 goals in approximately 46 appearances, he remains Canada's all-time leading scorer with 42 international goals, including three at the 2026 World Cup.
