Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was seen making an obscene gesture toward a spectator during Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Duran stated the reaction was in response to a fan allegedly telling him to kill himself.
This incident follows past controversies for Duran, including a suspension for using a homophobic slur at a spectator in 2024. He later apologized and donated his forfeited salary to PFLAG.
In 2025, a Netflix documentary featured Duran discussing his mental health, revealing he had attempted suicide. He expressed that discussing his struggles sometimes "brings in the haters." Manager Alex Cora was unaware of the incident and intends to speak with Duran.
Duran mentioned he was trying to keep the situation private to focus on the team's performance. He had previously expressed a renewed mental approach for the current season, aiming for a more resilient mindset.
