Sonis's Dream Season: Hometown Hero Scores Big

Janine Sonis is relishing a career-defining season with the Denver Summit, her hometown professional women's soccer team. The veteran defender, who also plays for Canada, stated that her current enjoyment is translating directly into her on-field performance, making this her most fulfilling season to date. Playing for Denver, a team she never expected to exist during her career, has been a profound dream come true.

The NWSL and Canada veteran has been a crucial influence for the Summit in their debut season. Her leadership and strong play have helped the team maintain consistency, with many games decided by narrow margins. Sonis acknowledges the league's significant progress since its inception, noting that expansion teams like Denver now have a much smoother entry into the NWSL.

The Summit are currently positioned just outside the playoff spots, having achieved seven wins, six draws, and eight defeats. With nine regular-season matches remaining, the team is focusing on breaking into the top positions. Sonis emphasizes the importance of developing attacking partnerships and ensuring full-backs contribute effectively to create scoring opportunities.

Adding to the team's strength is the recent addition of Champions League winner Lindsey Heaps. Heaps's experience and professionalism are reportedly having a significant impact on both the team's on-field performance and the locker room culture. Sonis also highlighted a 94th-minute free-kick goal against the Utah Royals as a personal favorite moment, reflecting her dedication to honing her set-piece skills.
