29 Sep, 2025
Summary
- 14-member all-women ITBP team summits Mount Nun at 7,135 meters
- Team led by 56-year-old Assistant Commandant Bhanita
- Directed to attempt Mount Everest in the next 3 years

On September 29, 2025, a remarkable achievement was accomplished by a 14-member all-women mountaineering team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The team successfully scaled Mount Nun in Ladakh, reaching an impressive altitude of 7,135 meters.
The expedition, led by 56-year-old Assistant Commandant Bhanita, was completed over a span of 15 days. The team encountered several high-altitude challenges, including extreme cold, altitude sickness, steep ice walls, glacial formations, unpredictable weather, and a crevasse-ridden terrain. However, their determination and technical climbing skills, along with the use of specialized gear, enabled them to overcome these obstacles and reach the summit.
With the Mount Nun conquest behind them, the ITBP's all-women team is now firmly set on their next goal: scaling Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,848 meters. The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the force to send teams to attempt Mount Everest each year for the next three years, and this current all-women team has been selected to be the first to make the attempt.
Bhanita, the expedition leader, expressed her pride in leading a team of women who had completed advanced mountaineering training. She is confident that the young and fit team will be able to successfully complete the Everest challenge, drawing inspiration from the fact that the oldest climbers for both men and women are over 70 and 80 years old.
