Monza Heat Hazard: Drivers Get Cooling Option

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza, taking place this weekend, has been officially designated a heat-hazard race. This classification comes as temperatures in the region are predicted to soar above 31C, with Milan already experiencing 36C earlier this week. The designation permits drivers to utilize a special cooling system within their cockpits. This system circulates cooled liquid to help manage the intense heat during the race.

While the use of this cooling technology is optional for drivers, cars foregoing it will need to carry an additional 5kg of ballast. This measure aims to balance the performance implications of the cooling system's weight. The Austrian Grand Prix earlier this season was the sole other race to receive the heat-hazard designation, highlighting the unusual conditions expected in Monza. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli is aiming for a home victory, though a potential grid penalty could open opportunities for rivals like Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris.
