15 Jan
Summary
- AFC confirms 2025-26 ISL season grants only indirect entry into AFC Champions League 2.
- Reduced 24-match requirement prevents Indian clubs from direct qualification.
- AIFF sought a one-time exemption from AFC for direct entry into continental club competitions.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed that the upcoming 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) season will only offer indirect entry into the AFC Champions League 2 for Indian clubs. This decision stems from the league's shortened format, which will prevent participating teams from fulfilling the mandatory 24-match requirement for direct qualification.
The AFC stated in a letter on January 15, 2026, that failing to meet eligibility criteria will result in Member Associations being allocated only indirect slots. The AIFF had formally requested a one-time exemption from the AFC, citing exceptional circumstances for the reduced number of matches. However, the continental body upheld its regulations.
The 2025-26 ISL season is slated to commence on February 14, 2026, featuring 91 matches in total, with each of the 14 clubs playing 13 single-leg games. This follows a period of uncertainty for the league, which was put on hold due to commercial agreement issues.
