Ishan Kishan: India's New ODI Vice-Captain Surprise
17 Oct
Summary
- Ishan Kishan appointed new ODI vice-captain, surprising many.
- Tilak Varma and Axar Patel were notably overlooked for the role.
- Kishan previously captained India U-19 and Jharkhand teams.
The selection committee, led by Pragyan Ojha, has appointed Ishan Kishan as the new vice-captain for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. This decision notably sidelines experienced players Tilak Varma and Axar Patel from the vice-captaincy role. Kishan's inclusion marks his first time in the ODI leadership group, highlighting his consistent performance since returning to international cricket.
Kishan brings prior captaincy experience, having led Jharkhand to a title win and guiding the India U-19 team to the final of the 2016 World Cup. He is expected to play all five ODIs as he is not part of the Test squad. This appointment could indicate future leadership potential for the Men in Blue.
The ODI series against New Zealand is scheduled to take place on November 4, 7, 10, 13, and 15. The selection committee's choice to overlook Varma, the current T20I vice-captain, and Patel, a former T20I vice-captain and senior team member, has generated considerable discussion.
