BCCI Skips IPL Opener Ceremony to Respect Victims
26 Mar
Summary
- IPL 2026 opening ceremony canceled to honor 11 stampede victims.
- BCCI plans grand closing ceremony for IPL 2026 on May 31.
- IPL 2026 begins March 28 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will forego the customary opening ceremony for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. This decision is a solemn tribute to the 11 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a stampede incident on June 4 of the previous year during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title celebrations.
Consequently, there will be no pre-match festivities for the inaugural IPL 2026 match scheduled between the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. This opener is set to take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 28.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that while the start will be without fanfare, a grand closing ceremony is being planned for May 31, the date of the IPL final. This thoughtful approach mirrors a past decision in 2019 when the IPL opening ceremony was scrapped and funds were donated to victims' families following the Pulwama attack.
