Iowa's Special Teams: New Era, New Questions

The Iowa Hawkeyes' special teams unit faces significant changes for the 2026 season. Key contributors like kicker Drew Stevens, punter Rhys Dakin, return specialist Kaden Wetjen, and long-time coordinator LeVar Woods have departed, ushering in a new era under new special teams coordinator Chris Polizzi.

Despite these losses, Iowa anticipates continued success in the return game, with Zach Lutmer and either Nathan McNeil or Brevin Doll expected to handle punt and kickoff returns, respectively. The team aims to maintain its streak of scoring at least one return touchdown, a feat achieved in each of the last three seasons. However, the unit may also concede a return touchdown early in the season.

In the kicking game, transfer Eli Ozick from North Dakota State is expected to win the field goal job. Ozick had an impressive 88.9% success rate last season and is anticipated to convert at least 85% of his attempts for the Hawkeyes. The punting game also sees potential for a revival, with Boston Everitt expected to take over the primary punting duties, focusing on pinning opponents deep.
