17 Jul
Summary
- Colton Sims executed a blind glove flip to Weston Mazey for an out.
- Sims is a second base candidate for the Mountaineers next spring.
- Mazey is developing as a solid college baseball player.
Colton Sims and Weston Mazey, playing for the Richmond Flying Mummies in the Northwoods League, recently showcased an exceptional defensive maneuver. Sims, positioned at second base, fielded a ground ball hit back up the middle with a backhand grab. Instead of a conventional throw, he adeptly flipped the ball with his glove hand to Mazey.
Mazey, demonstrating quick awareness, spun to set his feet and delivered an accurate throw to secure the out. This heads-up play prevented a likely late throw had Sims attempted it himself, highlighting their coordinated effort.
Sims is being considered a potential candidate for the Mountaineers' second base position next spring. Currently, in 13 games, he is batting .234 with three home runs and 13 RBI, though he has 19 strikeouts to three walks.
Mazey continues his development, weighing 160 pounds. In 11 games, he is batting .184 with three RBI, 14 strikeouts, and five walks. He also recently stole home and recorded his first career hit earlier in the spring.
