IndyCar Practice Ends in Chaos: Kirkwood & Rasmussen Crash
29 Aug
Summary
- Two drivers crashed late in practice, causing heavy damage.
- Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Rasmussen collided exiting Turn 2.
- Rasmussen's team had to use a backup car after the incident.

Opening practice for this weekend's IndyCar Series doubleheader at The Milwaukee Mile ended abruptly for two drivers. Championship contender Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Rasmussen, the previous year's Milwaukee winner, sustained heavy damage after a late-session collision. The incident happened in the final 30 minutes of the sole 90-minute practice session.
Kirkwood attempted an inside pass on Rasmussen exiting Turn 2, but contact as they entered Turn 3 sent Kirkwood's car into a spin and into Rasmussen. Both drivers' cars then impacted the outside wall. Rasmussen's Chevrolet briefly lifted off the ground over Kirkwood's car.
Rasmussen's team was compelled to utilize a backup car near the session's end due to the extensive damage. Despite the incident, Kirkwood's earlier speed kept him eighth on the timing sheets, while Rasmussen finished 13th.
Josef Newgarden topped the practice session with a speed of 159.430 mph.
