Injured Rossi Set to Compete in Indianapolis 500
24 May
Summary
- Alexander Rossi cleared to race in Indy 500 after crash and surgery.
- Rossi's focus was on car function and comfort, not speed on Carb Day.
- Josef Newgarden posted the fastest lap during the final practice session.

Indianapolis 500 contender Alexander Rossi has received clearance to compete in the upcoming race, overcoming a significant crash and subsequent surgery. The 2016 race winner sustained injuries to his left middle finger and right ankle during practice earlier in the week, leading to surgical intervention.
Despite the setbacks, Rossi expressed gratitude towards his team and medical professionals at IU Health for their efforts in his recovery. During the final practice session, known as Carb Day, Rossi's primary objective was to ensure his backup car was functional and that he was comfortable operating the pedals with his specially designed brace. He completed this final test without issue, solidifying his participation.
While Rossi focused on readiness, other drivers were also making preparations. Josef Newgarden set the fastest lap during the final practice, with Christian Rasmussen following closely behind. Other incidents during practice included Marcus Ericsson reporting a potential loose wheel and crew members for Felix Rosenqvist addressing an undisclosed part issue on their car. Katherine Legge continued her preparations for racing's "double," aiming for the Coca-Cola 600 on Saturday.
The day's events also saw the annual pit-stop competition canceled due to rain, and New York Dog winning the Oscar Mayer Wienie 500.
