Indoor Ski Slopes Rise as Climate Warms

Indoor ski slopes are rapidly expanding across the globe as outdoor skiing faces challenges from rising travel expenses and a warming climate. These climate-controlled facilities offer a consistent snow experience, distancing them from the unpredictable conditions of natural environments. This growth is particularly notable in Europe and Asia, with significant expansion also occurring in China and potential developments in Australia.

Globally, the number of indoor ski centers has seen a substantial increase, nearly doubling from approximately 80 in 2009 to close to 200 by last spring. This trend suggests a growing demand for accessible winter sports, independent of geographical limitations or seasonal snow availability. Britain, for instance, has five such centers, catering to its 1.8 million active skiers and snowboarders who often travel abroad for slopes.

As the accessibility of traditional skiing diminishes due to environmental and economic factors, indoor ski centers are positioned to meet the increasing interest in these activities. Their proliferation signals a significant adaptation within the winter sports industry, ensuring continued opportunities for enthusiasts.
