On August 3rd, 2025, former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik criticized the tactics of Indian batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill during the ongoing fifth Test at The Oval. Heading close to lunch on Day 3, the two batters appeared to be deliberately slowing down the proceedings, with Gill taking his time to ensure the 44th over would be the last before the break.
Jaiswal, who was at the non-striker's end, then feigned an injury, seemingly to further delay the start of the next over. Karthik, who was commentating on the match, expressed his disapproval, stating that batters should be ready to face the bowler when they are at the top of their mark.
Despite the controversy, Yashasvi Jaiswal went on to score a fabulous hundred, his second of the series. The 23-year-old left-hander made 118 runs off 164 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and two sixes. Karthik praised Jaiswal's performance, calling it a "very successful series" for the youngster on his first tour of England. He noted that while the pitches have been good for batting, Jaiswal's application and century at The Oval were particularly impressive.
Jaiswal ended the series with 411 runs from ten innings, averaging 41.10 with two hundreds and as many half-centuries. His impressive display as an opener has certainly given the Indian team management something to think about ahead of their future assignments.
