3 Oct, 2025
Summary
- Vaishali overcame 7 straight losses to win Grand Swiss title
- Younger brother Praggnanandhaa's support helped her through difficult times
- Vaishali is 3rd Indian to qualify for prestigious Candidates tournament

In a remarkable turnaround, Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali has qualified for the prestigious Candidates tournament next year after winning the Grand Swiss event in Samarkand. Just a few months ago, the 24-year-old was on the verge of quitting chess altogether following a devastating run of 7 straight losses at the Chennai Grandmasters.
Vaishali was completely demoralized by her poor performance in Chennai, telling her parents that she did not want to play in the upcoming Grand Swiss tournament. However, with the encouragement and support of her family, especially her younger brother and fellow chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali decided to give it one more shot.
The change in mindset paid off, as Vaishali went on to win the Grand Swiss title, becoming the third Indian woman to qualify for the Candidates event after Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy. Vaishali credits her family's unwavering belief in her abilities as the key factor that helped her overcome the difficult phase and achieve this career-defining success.
Despite the hard work she had been putting in all year, Vaishali was struggling to translate it into results until the Grand Swiss triumph. She is now looking forward to the Candidates tournament, where she will have the opportunity to compete against the world's best chess players and potentially earn a spot in the World Championship match.
