The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently grappling with considerable financial strain attributed to recent international friendlies. Reports indicate that AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey sought to access a Rs 20 crore fixed deposit to meet appearance fees, a proposal met with opposition. The federation owes substantial amounts to participating nations, with approximately Rs 21 crore due to Brazil and Rs 7 crore to Uruguay, though Panama has received full payment.
Adding to financial woes, initial ticket prices for the friendlies were set high, resulting in lower-than-anticipated sales. Adjustments were made only after promotional offers were introduced at the last minute. These financial challenges come amidst criticism of the AIFF's planning, including squad selections and the delay of domestic leagues.
In preparation for upcoming matches, head coach Khalid Jamil has named a 23-player squad for friendlies against New Zealand. This squad selection has also drawn controversy, with three players being pulled from the ongoing SAFF Championship mid-tournament. The team is scheduled to train in Bengaluru before departing for Auckland, New Zealand, for matches on November 12 and November 15.
