Indian cricketers Varun Chakravarthy and Washington Sundar observed a spiritual tradition following India's recent T20 World Cup triumph. Instead of public festivities, the duo undertook a barefoot circumambulation around the sacred Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai.
This revered ritual, known as Girivalam, is an act of devotion and gratitude. The players first offered prayers at the Annamalaiyar Temple before embarking on the approximately 14-kilometer walk around the holy hill. This practice is deeply rooted in Hindu belief, with the hill itself considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva.
Girivalam is believed to bring spiritual merit, inner peace, and blessings. Devotees often undertake this walk seeking purification and relief from life's burdens. The circumambulation is typically performed clockwise, keeping the sacred hill on their right, and is considered a powerful spiritual practice.
Full moon nights, known as Pournami, and Pradosham days are considered particularly auspicious for this pilgrimage. While many walk barefoot as a sign of humility and devotion, others may wear simple footwear. The entire journey around the hill is largely flat, making it accessible to a wide range of devotees.
