Illini QB Battle: Houser Leads, But Who's Next?
5 Aug
Summary
- Coach Bielema utilizes transfer portal for standout quarterbacks.
- A competition is brewing for the QB2 position behind Houser.
- New camera tech monitors QB confidence through their volume.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema continues to demonstrate his skill in identifying quarterback talent from the transfer portal, most recently with Katin Houser. Bielema has a history of finding success with quarterbacks seeking new opportunities, including past successes like Tommy DeVito and Luke Altmyer.
Currently, the focus is on the competition for the second-string quarterback position. Bielema admitted this battle is a "non-storyline battle," emphasizing the quality depth behind Houser. Three quarterbacks are vying for the QB2 role, with Carson Boyd and Michael Clayton II reportedly in strong contention.
Bielema has implemented a new strategy, equipping quarterbacks with cameras to assess their field vision and, notably, their confidence levels through their vocal communication. He believes that "volume reflects confidence," indicating that quarterbacks who speak with more authority often command greater respect.
Carson Boyd, a redshirt sophomore, appears to be a strong candidate for QB2. Having redshirted, he is familiar with the system and learned from Luke Altmyer. His high school statistics also showcase his dual-threat capabilities with over 3,000 passing and 1,000 rushing yards.
Freshman Michael Clayton II from Orlando, a 6-foot-4 prospect, also had an impressive high school career with over 6,000 passing yards and 72 touchdowns, attracting attention from numerous major programs before choosing Illinois.
Another quarterback drawing significant praise is Dane Eisenmenger. Bielema noted Eisenmenger's substantial improvement over the past two and a half years. The freshman from Unity, Illinois, has already seen remarkable jersey sales, surpassing some basketball counterparts.
Eisenmenger's on-field performance in high school was exceptional, setting single-season records with 3,447 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, leading his team to a state runner-up finish. He also holds career records for passing yards and touchdowns, positioning him as a promising talent.
While the team hopes for an injury-free season for Katin Houser, the depth at the quarterback position provides confidence that the Fighting Illini have capable players ready to step up.
