Illinois Illini: Key Questions for 2026-27 Season

The Illinois Illini are generating significant excitement for the upcoming 2026-27 basketball season, their sights set on a national championship following a Final Four appearance. Achieving this ambitious goal requires significant contributions from across the roster, with individual player development and adaptation to new roles being paramount.

Key questions loom for each player entering the new campaign. For sophomores like David Mirkovic and Stefan Vaaks, improved physical condition and contributions in rebounding and defense are vital. Freshman Lincoln Williams faces the challenge of becoming an immediate defensive impact player.

Veteran players also face scrutiny. Senior Andrej Stojakovic must boost his three-point percentage, while Tomislav Ivisic and Zvonimir Ivisic need to regain or improve their consistent offensive production and shooting efficiency, respectively.

Sophomore Blake Fagbemi is tasked with being a vocal leader and extension of the coaching staff. Freshmen Quentin Coleman, Zavier Zens, Lucas Morillo, Landon Davis, and Ethan Brown will need to carve out roles, with their versatility, shooting, defensive potential, and early summer performances being closely watched.

The team's depth and role definition will be thoroughly tested. The ability of players like Jason Jakstys to provide valuable minutes in limited frontcourt opportunities, and how freshmen like Coleman and Morillo adapt to potential shifts in roles, will be critical in Illinois' pursuit of a championship.
