Reds' Greene Undergoes Elbow Surgery, Eyes Second Half
18 Mar
Summary
- Hunter Greene had elbow surgery to remove loose bodies, likely delaying his season start.
- He previously opted for a plasma injection instead of surgery, which did not resolve pain.
- Greene is expected to return in July, targeting the second half of the season.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene recently underwent arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his right elbow. This procedure is expected to delay the start of his 2026 season until July.
Greene had previously opted for a Platelet-Rich Plasma injection and rest in October 2025, following advice from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, rather than immediate surgery. However, he experienced a return of 'stabbing pain' in his elbow shortly before spring training camp opened, which an injection could not resolve.
After one Cactus League start on February 28, 2026, where he allowed four runs, Greene was shut down. Both Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek and Dr. ElAttrache determined surgery was necessary. Greene is now focusing on rehabilitation, with immediate positive signs of elbow flexion noted.
Manager Terry Francona indicated that Andrew Abbott will start on Opening Day, and the Reds will utilize a six-starter rotation to cover Greene's absence. Barring setbacks, Greene anticipates a return in July, aiming to contribute to the team's performance in the latter half of the season and potentially the postseason.
