The University of Houston's football team is set to make a stellar statement this season with a groundbreaking collection of ten unique, hand-painted helmets. These cosmic designs, a signature element of the Built By Houston initiative, will evolve annually with new themes.
For the 2026 season, the Cougars will don helmets representing the Sun, eight planets, and the dwarf planet Pluto during their game against UCF. Each helmet features a connection to the university and Houston's significant legacy in space exploration. The institution's Clear Lake campus was established to support NASA's Johnson Space Center.
This deep-rooted connection to space includes its role in training the second group of NASA astronauts, notably Neil Armstrong. The helmet collection, featuring specific jersey numbers for each celestial body, showcases Houston's commitment to creativity and its unique heritage.
