Cougars Eye CFP Berth Against New-Look Beavers

The No. 23 Houston Cougars are initiating their ambitious College Football Playoff campaign this Saturday against a significantly altered Oregon State Beavers team. Houston, a dark-horse selection for the playoff, returns quarterback Conner Weigman, who delivered 2,705 yards and 25 touchdowns last season. The Cougars have significantly strengthened their receiving corps with the addition of Trent Walker, Oregon State's top receiver from the previous year, alongside other capable targets. The offensive line also sees key reinforcements with experienced transfers bolstering its ranks.

On the other side, the Oregon State Beavers are embarking on a new chapter under first-year head coach JaMarcus Shephard. Following a difficult 2025 season, Shephard aims to establish a strong team identity, emphasizing resilience and adaptability. The Beavers will feature sophomore Braden Atkinson at quarterback, who earned the Jerry Rice Award last season for his standout freshman performance in FCS football. The Cougars hold a historical advantage in the series, having won three of the four previous matchups, including a close contest last year.
