Hockey India Probe: Ministry Steps In Amid Harassment Claims
16 Jul
Summary
- Ministry directs IOA to form a neutral committee for the probe.
- Former captain Asunta Lakra sought impartial investigation from ministry.
- Hockey Jharkhand elections challenged over alleged illegal terms.

Allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation within Hockey India have escalated, prompting the Sports Ministry to direct the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to conduct an investigation. The ministry requested the IOA to form a fair and transparent committee to examine the claims brought forth by former India captain Asunta Lakra.
Lakra had appealed to the ministry, expressing concerns about potential bias if Hockey India handled the inquiry internally. Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey also formally requested the sports secretary to constitute an independent committee, acknowledging that an internal probe might raise impartiality issues.
Meanwhile, a separate legal challenge has been filed by 13 national and international players concerning the Hockey Jharkhand elections, scheduled for July 19. The players accuse Bholanath Singh, who is running unopposed for president, of illegally serving a fourth term and violating the National Sports Governance Act.
