In Bengaluru, a unique sports meet named 'Champion in Me' empowered 1,000 participants, featuring HIV-positive children and youth alongside other vulnerable groups. The event powerfully conveyed that HIV does not dictate one's future, emphasizing potential instead. A significant moment was the debut of the first-ever football team comprising exclusively HIV-positive players, who competed against a local soccer school, highlighting their dedication to balancing work, studies, and managing their health.
Founded in 2009 by the Bangalore Schools Sports Foundation, 'Champion in Me' initially focused on HIV-positive children but has expanded its reach to include children from slum communities and those with physical or intellectual challenges. This initiative aims to build societal understanding and integration by supporting the physical and mental well-being of participants and helping them overcome challenges, fostering a sense of community through sports.
The program celebrates notable success stories, such as runners Bharathi S and Sonika, who have achieved international recognition and are preparing for the Everest Marathon. These athletes exemplify the resilience and dedication fostered by CiM, juggling demanding careers and studies with rigorous training, inspiring others and demonstrating that with support and opportunity, remarkable achievements are possible.
