The fifth annual HBCU Legacy Bowl is scheduled for Saturday in New Orleans, serving as a crucial proving ground for draft-eligible football players from historically Black colleges and universities. This event, established by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, puts talented athletes on display, continuing a rich tradition that has produced NFL standouts like Jerry Rice and Javon Hargrave.
Players from various HBCUs will compete on either Team Gaither or Team Robinson. Notable talents include North Carolina Central quarterback Walker Harris, MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Cameron Peters of Prairie View A&M, who excelled in the Celebration Bowl. Norfolk State's wide receiver duo, JJ Evans and DreSean Kendrick, along with Alabama A&M tight end Travaunta Abner, are expected to make significant impacts. On defense, Southern's Ckelby Givens leads the pass rush, and North Carolina Central's Jelani Vassell is a key defensive back.
The game will be broadcast on NFL Network, with Steve Wyche providing play-by-play. The halftime show will feature a performance by Jackson State's renowned "Sonic Boom of the South" marching band. The event's roots trace back to Grambling State alumni James 'Shack' Harris and Doug Williams, pioneers in Black quarterback history in the NFL.
