Hawks' Jalen Johnson faces tough Wembanyama test

The Atlanta Hawks began their 2026-27 preseason campaign with a 132-123 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, revealing areas for improvement. Despite the initial setback, the team looks ahead to a challenging matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, a game that will test head coach Quin Snyder's vision.

Jalen Johnson, a recent All-NBA selection, faced scrutiny after a difficult opening performance against Memphis. However, facing generational prospect Cameron Boozer was a tough assignment. Johnson is anticipated to have a stronger showing against the Spurs, particularly with Tobias Harris potentially sidelined for San Antonio, leaving few capable of matching Johnson's physical attributes.

Ousmane Ejiofor provided a valuable spark with his hustle and defense in limited minutes, finishing with a +7 rating. While Asa Newell also contributed, Ejiofor's polished play and defensive presence are noted as key assets. His unique physical traits might even offer some advantage when defending Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.

Encouragingly, back-end rotation players Corey Kispert and Jalen Wilson demonstrated positive performances. Kispert, despite defensive concerns, displayed strong shooting, hitting 4-of-7 three-pointers en route to 19 points. Wilson showcased his athleticism and scoring ability, contributing 12 points and making key free throws, setting a positive tone for his potential impact.

The Hawks' preseason game against the Spurs is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET and will be available on NBA League Pass. The team is expected to maintain its starting lineup unless injuries to McCollum or Dort persist.
