Hawaii is making waves with the inauguration of its first state high school athletic association surfing championship this weekend. The action-packed event is scheduled for Friday, May 1, through Saturday, May 2, at the renowned Hookipa Beach Park.
A total of 174 athletes, consisting of 87 boys and 87 girls, will represent their schools. These competitors will vie for championship titles across three distinct divisions: shortboard, longboard, and bodyboard. The competition will feature teams from 36 high schools for boys and 27 high schools for girls, encompassing all five of the state's high school leagues.
To accommodate the championship, Hookipa Beach Park will experience temporary closures. Access will be restricted to competition use only from 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, until 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Public access will be restored at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Spectators are encouraged to utilize free HHSAA event shuttles from the Holomua Road parking lot, with services beginning at 6 a.m. on both competition days.
The surfing action will commence at 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The competition is slated to conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, with awards to follow the final heats on Saturday.
