29 Mar
Summary
- Lewis Hamilton starts sixth, behind teammates and rivals.
- Ferrari struggles with pace compared to Mercedes-powered cars.
- Hamilton aims for podium despite significant performance gap.

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton believes Ferrari is considerably trailing the leading teams after a challenging qualifying in Suzuka. Hamilton will begin the Grand Prix from sixth position, with his teammate Charles Leclerc starting fourth. The McLaren drivers, benefiting from Mercedes engines, have shown notable progress this weekend, further highlighting Ferrari's current pace deficit.
Hamilton acknowledged that closing the performance gap to Mercedes and McLaren is a significant challenge, even with potential upgrades. "To close that gap is going to take a mighty push," he stated. Despite the concerns about raw speed, Hamilton expressed satisfaction with his own performance and is focused on maximizing his opportunities from the third row of the grid, alongside Lando Norris. He indicated that without specific deployment issues, he might have qualified higher.
The Japanese Grand Prix marks a significant event for Hamilton, who has a strong record at Suzuka with five previous wins. However, he is yet to secure a victory with Ferrari. The team's last win was in Mexico in October 2024, achieved by Carlos Sainz. Pole position for Sunday's race will be taken by Kimi Antonelli, alongside Mercedes driver George Russell.
