Hackney's 'San Siro' Faces Demolition for Homes
22 Jul
Summary
- Beloved football pitch to be demolished for social housing construction.
- Community fears loss of vital, self-governing youth space.
- Hackney Council promises new facilities post-development.

The Keith Miller sports pitch in Hackney, affectionately nicknamed the "San Siro of east London," is scheduled for demolition by the end of the year. This demolition is part of a housebuilding program aimed at constructing urgently needed social homes. The project is expected to take two years, with Hackney Council promising to deliver new green and ball play spaces upon completion.
Community organizers and users, however, fear the loss of this unique, self-governing space. They highlight its importance for local youth, offering a democratic environment where teenagers can freely play and socialize away from harsh judgments. The pitch, described as a "stage" shielded by a wall, has fostered a sense of community and joy, with some top footballers having honed their skills there.
The redevelopment is set to bring 400 new homes, two-thirds for social rent, addressing London's homelessness crisis. Yet, concerns persist that such "infill" projects on existing estates often sacrifice vital community assets. Activists point to similar battles in other London areas where rebuilt spaces were less accessible or more prone to complaints.
Hackney Council states it is re-providing an improved astroturf pitch and will continue vital youth activities during construction. Nevertheless, the loss of the pitch's informal, free-to-use nature is seen as a significant blow, with worries that young people may be left with fewer safe and accessible recreational options.
