Guangzhou Pioneers Sustainable, Tech-Driven Hosting of 15th National Games

As of November 8th, 2025, the city of Guangzhou in China's Guangdong province is preparing to host the 15th National Games, a major national-level sports event. Guangzhou has been making extensive preparations to ensure a successful and sustainable event, including investments in urban improvements, venue renovations, and the integration of advanced technologies.

The city has undertaken 291 urban improvement projects covering roads, gardens, rivers, neighborhoods, lighting, and more to enhance the overall appearance and infrastructure. In terms of venue upgrades, Guangzhou has renovated 30 facilities, with a focus on energy efficiency and accessibility. For instance, the Tianhe Sports Center Stadium has achieved over 45% in energy savings and carbon reduction, becoming China's first large-scale near-zero-carbon stadium. The renovations have also added features like an aerial circular track, outdoor fitness areas, and wheelchair-accessible viewing spaces.

To further leverage technology, Guangzhou is deploying a range of cutting-edge tools for the event. This includes the use of AI cameras for crowd monitoring, intelligent meteorological systems for accurate weather forecasting, and AI-powered live broadcast cameras for sports events. The city is also experimenting with innovative solutions like avatar volunteers and metaverse-driven athlete villages to enhance the overall experience.

Beyond the event itself, Guangzhou is transforming its venues and neighborhoods into new landmarks for public fitness and culture, adding 150,000 square meters of green space and improving outdoor sports facilities. The city's efforts demonstrate its commitment to hosting a sustainable, technologically advanced, and community-focused National Games that will leave a lasting impact on the Greater Bay Area.
