Summary
- Heavy rain promises a 'claggier and gloopier' 20-mile race course.
- Around 1,500 runners will tackle hills, pebbles, and deep bogs.
- Event acknowledges International Women's Day with runner Fatima Painda.

The upcoming 38th edition of the Grizzly race, organized by Axe Valley Runners along Devon's coast, is set to be exceptionally demanding. Recent heavy rains have transformed the 20-mile course into a "claggier and gloopier" obstacle, with bogs expected to be significantly deeper than in previous years. This challenging terrain is anticipated to add to the event's notorious difficulty.
Approximately 1,500 runners are registered for the main 20-mile race, with hundreds more participating in shorter junior and 9-mile Cub races. Organisers noted that while the conditions will be "slippery," the extreme mud is a celebrated aspect of the race, often a topic of conversation among participants post-event. The theme for this year's race is "One Step Beyond."
Adding a layer of significance, the race coincides with International Women's Day. Ultra marathon runner Fatima Painda, an ambassador for Free to Run who escaped the Taliban in Afghanistan, is scheduled to participate. The event also plans to support the Farming Community Network Charity and community volunteer groups with financial contributions.
Despite the gruelling nature, the Grizzly race fosters a strong sense of community and achievement. Runners from various European countries, including France, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, are drawn to the event for its "real challenge" and celebratory atmosphere, complete with live bands and local support along the iconic course.
