Grassroots Cycling Funding: A Critical Need
7 Feb
Summary
- Community cycling infrastructure requires £30 million investment.
- The Places to Ride scheme has already benefited over 150 clubs.
- Accessibility is key, with clubs lending bikes to families.

Ensuring grassroots funding is critical for making cycling accessible to everyone, according to cycling clubs. British Cycling is seeking a significant £30 million investment for the next phase of a national scheme aimed at bolstering community cycling infrastructure.
The 'Places to Ride' program, launched in 2019, has already positively impacted over 150 cycling clubs. East Bradford Cycling Club, for instance, benefited from this scheme, which helped fund essential facilities such as new tracks and equipment. Without this support, the club might not exist today.
Head coach Mandy Parker stressed the importance of removing financial barriers, stating that many families struggle to afford bicycles for their children. The club actively lends bikes, even for competitions, ensuring participation is not limited by cost. This initiative aims to teach children to ride and support their cycling journey.
