Summary
- Shubman Gill appointed India's new vice-captain for Asia Cup 2025
- Rinku Singh's place in playing XI now doubtful, says Murali Kartik
- India facing "problem of plenty" with quality spinners and all-rounders

As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, former India spinner Murali Kartik has shed light on the selection challenges facing the national team. According to Kartik, the recent appointment of Shubman Gill as India's new vice-captain has raised questions about the playing opportunities for players like Rinku Singh.
Kartik acknowledged that India is currently facing a "problem of plenty" when it comes to their squad composition. The team boasts a wealth of talent, including quality spinners and all-rounders, which has made it difficult for the selectors to finalize the playing XI.
The 48-year-old pointed out that Rinku Singh has been a standout performer for India, but with Gill's elevation to the vice-captaincy role, his chances of securing a spot in the starting lineup may have diminished. Kartik also noted that Jitesh Sharma is receiving extensive wicketkeeping practice, further complicating the team's selection dilemma.
Despite the selection headaches, Kartik expressed confidence that the team's "braintrust," including former players like Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar, will find the right solutions. He believes it is better for India to have an abundance of talent to choose from rather than a lack of options.
The Men in Blue will open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against the United Arab Emirates, followed by matches against Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19.
