Giants Trade for McCarthy, QB Shakeup Underway

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback JJ McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. This move comes as the Giants look to address their quarterback situation following injuries to franchise player Jaxson Dart and inconsistent performance from Jameis Winston.

McCarthy, originally the 10th overall pick in 2023, had his 2024 rookie season derailed by injury. His 2025 campaign saw him start 10 games with a 6-4 record, but he averaged only 163.2 passing yards per game with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He subsequently lost his starting position and suffered an ankle injury.

The Giants' current situation includes Dart, who is out for the 2026 season after a Week 2 injury, and Winston, who has struggled to inspire confidence in relief. Winston completed just 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception against the Los Angeles Rams and followed up with 14-of-22 for 118 yards against the Tennessee Titans amidst poor weather conditions.

Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged Winston's performance as "required" for the 2-1 Giants, but the team's playoff aspirations necessitate a stronger quarterback presence. McCarthy's arrival offers a potential pathway to contention, providing a year-long opportunity to prove his capabilities as a starting quarterback.
