£150,000 Aid for Sports Village After Structural Collapse

A football club could receive a vital loan of up to £150,000 from North Yorkshire Council due to unexpected structural problems at its home ground. Scarborough Sports Village has been closed because of serious issues with its foundations and drainage system, forcing Scarborough Athletic FC to relocate home matches to Bridlington.

This relocation has resulted in a significant decrease in the club's income due to lower attendance. The council's proposed loan aims to offer crucial financial stability. The full repair of the ground and the relaying of the 3G pitch are anticipated to cost approximately £3.2 million, with completion scheduled for August.

Council members will review the loan proposal on Tuesday, January 17. A spokesperson confirmed the loan would only be accessed if necessary and would be provided at standard commercial rates. The council is also considering a small grant to help service any loan, encouraging the club to minimize debt.

Simon Myers, executive member for leisure, highlighted the community's reliance on the club and the impact of lost matchday income. While fundraising and sponsor support are in place, cash flow issues are expected in the short term. Repairs are underway, with the first phase of pitch removal completed in January.
