FIGC Presidency Race Heats Up: Malagò vs. Abete
13 May
Summary
- Malagò and Abete formalized their candidacies for FIGC President.
- The election follows Gravina's resignation after World Cup qualification failure.
- Malagò is expected to secure a majority of votes.

Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete have officially lodged their candidacies for the upcoming FIGC Presidency election, set to take place on June 22. This pivotal election is necessitated by the resignation of Gabriele Gravina following Italy's unsuccessful bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Malagò, previously the President of CONI, and Abete, the current head of the amateur divisions (LND), had long been expected to contend for the role. Their candidacies were formalized on Wednesday, the final deadline for submission. The FIGC is expected to formally approve these candidacies by May 22, a step considered a mere formality.
Early indications suggest Malagò holds a strong advantage, reportedly commanding a majority of the votes. His campaign has garnered support from Lega Serie A, the players' association, and the coaches' association. The Lega Serie B also recently declared its endorsement for Malagò's candidacy.
Abete, representing the LND, will benefit from the 34% share of votes allocated to the amateur leagues. The distribution of voting power includes Lega Serie A (18%), Lega Serie B (6%), Lega Pro (12%), LND (34%), the players' association (20%), and the coaches' association (10%).
